The Operation Popeye conspiracy theory proposes that Operation Popeye was the first attempt to modify the weather by the US government. The operation began on March 20, 1967, and ended on July 5, 1972.

Conspiracy[edit | edit source]

During the Vietnam War, the US government aimed to harness the weather by increasing rainfall - so as to hinder the Vietnamese from obtaining supplies. The objective was to wash out river crossings and cause landslides. The US government seeded the clouds with silver and lead iodide. The results were a success and were thereby able to extend the monsoon period. However, the rainfall flooded the Song Con River which resulted in the failure of Operation Ivory Coast.
